10/4/01 - Jason Eddy Named Northeast-10 Scholar-Athlete Of The Year

SMITHFIELD, R.I. — The Northeast-10 Conference has announced that Bryant College senior Jason Eddy (Rochester, Mass.), a captain of the Bulldog cross country and track and field teams, has been named the 2000-01 Northeast-10 Conference male scholar-athlete of the year.

The scholar-athlete award is presented to one male and one female student-athlete among the 20 conference sports and 15 member institutions. Stacy Mattioli, a basketball standout and 2001 graduate of Assumption College was the female winner of the award.

“I congratulate Jason Eddy and Stacy Mattioli on their achievements,” said Northeast-10 commissioner David R. Brunk. “The Northeast-10 Conference takes pride in its strength academically, and our winners epitomize the well-rounded student-athletes on our campuses who successfully integrate athletics and academics.”

The award is presented for academic and athletic achievement in the 2000-01 season. As a junior, Eddy registered three top-five and four top-10 finishes in seven cross country races. He was a third-team All-Northeast-10 selection and finished in the top 20 at the NCAA New England regional race.

A two-time Northeast-10 Conference academic honor roll selection, Eddy has made the Dean’s List six times at Bryant and has achieved a 4.00 grade-point average in each of his last three semesters. He has a cumulative GPA of 3.90 with a major in accounting.

Eddy has been nothing short of spectacular as a senior. In four races this season, Eddy has placed first twice and finished second in the other two. He has been named the Northeast-10 runner of the week in three of the four weeks of the 2001 fall season.

Eddy will be honored by Bryant College at a special presentation prior to the Bulldogs’ football game against Bentley Saturday and as part of the college’s Homecoming Reunion festivities, in which Bryant will host the Northeast-10 Conference men’s and women’s cross country championships.

9/13/01 - Former Bryant Student-Athlete Among Casualties in New York City

SMITHFIELD, R.I. — The tragedy that struck New York City and the nation Tuesday has hit close to home on the Bryant College campus as two alums of the college, including a former standout on the college’s cross country and track and field teams, were reported among those killed on United Airlines Fight 175 — the Boston-based flight bound for Los Angeles that crashed into the World Trade Center tower shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Shawn Nassaney of Pawtucket, R.I., and Lynn Goodchild of Attleboro, Mass., both 1998 graduates of Bryant, were aboard the plane when it crashed, according to the Associated Press.

Nassaney, 25, was a captain of the men’s cross country team at Bryant and twice received the college’s Bulldog Award, given for ability and commitment to the program. He is remembered on-campus as a competitive athlete, a natural leader and a good friend.

“When I first came to Bryant from Ohio, Shawn was the one who took me under his wing and helped me with everything I needed,” said Brendan Shannon, a friend and former teammate of Nassaney’s and now the director of marketing and promotions for Bryant’s department of athletics. “He really personified the true meaning of what a captain should be, on the team, in the athletic department and on the campus.”

Nassaney graduated from Bryant with honors in 1998 and had been employed at American Power Conversion in West Kingston, R.I.

Nassaney and Goodchild will be remembered at a candlelight vigil Thursday at 8 p.m. on the Bryant campus. The vigil will be held at the campus pond between the Unistructure, Bryant Center and Koffler Center.
