Three Mile Island is the sight of the most serious U.S. commercial nuclear reactor failure, which occurred on March 28, 1979, at the Three Mile Island reactor near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Around the same time the movie The China Syndrome was released, which portrayed a fictional accident at a nuclear power plant that eerily resembled the Three Mile Island disaster.  Real and fictional examples of nuclear power's potential dangers encouraged public support for the antinuclear movement.
