The psychology minor fortifies students’ preparation for any career by expanding their knowledge and understanding of people. Psychological inquiry helps students learn to critically analyze information about human behavior. The specialized skills of this field can be applicable to many others.

Why should I select a psychology minor?

  • “Psychology is a dynamic field. Psychologists have skills that are very adaptable and hold great promise for dealing with public needs… opportunities have never been greater” (Jack Wiggins, presidential address to the American Psychological Association, August, 1993).
  • Learn more about yourself and others. Recent research (e.g., Sheehan, 1994) has revealed that the study of psychology enhances student personal development by:
    • greater recognition of the factors that influence human behavior.
    • improved personal relations and greater tolerance of human diversity.
  • “…interpersonal skills …a major factor in the success of managers and executives…” (Wall Street Journal, February 6, 1996).
  • “…students need the skills to solve unstructured problems…and need communication and interpersonal skills…” (Wall Street Journal, November 28, 1994).
  • 1993 Money Magazine ranks psychology:
    • Fourth in the top 50 occupations with the brightest prospects for available positions in the 21st Century.
    • Seventh among the top 26 professions in entry level salaries.
    • Seventh in terms of median salaries and fifth in top salaries.
  • Fortify and broaden your major. For example, minoring in psychology would strengthen the behavioral aspects of Management and Marketing and add a behavioral dimension to Accounting and Finance.
  • By documenting a Psychology Minor on your resume, you will demonstrate the diversity of your educational background and enhance your career prospects.
  • Psychology is the second most popular undergraduate degree in the United States. Business Administration is #1 (APA Monitor, February, 1996).
  • Minoring in psychology puts you in a better position for graduate study in the behavioral sciences.
  • Psychology is a wide-ranging, dynamic field that includes development, personality, psychotherapy, environment and behavior, counseling, interpersonal relationships, and behavior acquisition and change.
  • With psychology, you can discover the excitement of understanding more about yourself and others.
  • Psychology study fosters a greater recognition for the interpersonal and communication skills influencing personal and professional success.
  • You will develop the ability to monitor your own behavior and to understand the behaviors of others.
