The Wood-Pawcatuck Watershed Association was founded in 1983 by a group of concerned citizens to promote and protect the integrity of the lands and waters of the watershed.  This region has some of the last remaining contiguous forests between the megalopolis of New York City and Boston.  WPWA promotes stewardship of water resources to citizens, students, and government officials.

In pursuit of these goals  WPWA has been involved in some major issues in the watershed - eutrophication of Yawgoo Pond by New England Shellfish Company, the proposed construction landfill in Richmond, and Six Flags Amusement Park proposal in Stonington.  However, the main goal of the association is to create an awareness of the value of the resources among all the stakeholders of the Pawcatuck watershed.  The stakeholders include anyone who lives, works or plays within its boundaries.

WPWA is a nonprofit conservation organization, funded by members’ dues; member, corporate, and municipal contributions; and foundation grants.  Major supporters since 1993 include The Bess Eaton Donut and Bake Shops, Champlin Foundation, Dunn Foundation, Felicia Fund, Freedom Forum, Kimball Foundation, Lattner Foundation, Maderia Charitable Trust, Moore Company, Narragansett Electric, Pfizer Corporation, Providence Journal Foundation, RI Foundation, Rockwell Levy Foundation, SLH Foundation, Sherbourne Foundation, Stop and Shop of Richmond, Washington Trust Company, Wattles Family Trust, Wimpfeimer Foundation, and the State of RI Legislative Grants .
