The Metasequoia Glyptostroboides, family of the dawn redwood, was at
one point in history thought to be extinct.
Plans have been implemented around the world in efforts to protect and
save the tree. But will that stop the
tree from one day being on the verge of extinction again?
The Greenhouse Effect feels a marketing strategy needs to be implemented in order to restore these trees back into their natural habitats, and not only in growing plantations and nursery’s. We are proposing ideas which will not only help the growth of the tree but also the numbers in which the tree will be able to grow in its natural habitat. We feel organized groups should be setup in order to restore the trees. These groups should consist of community members because they would have the self motivation to improve situations within their own communities.
Memorial
Groves
Metasequoia’s are used as memorial groves. This is where someone donates money to an organization and in return a tree is designated to represent a person or family, usually a deceased loved one. The tree will therefore be taken care of and protected.
Tree Planting
Through tree planting we can replace Metasequoia trees that may have been cut down or introduce them to an area that they will be able to thrive in. Although it will take centuries for these new trees to grow to the same splendor of the giants that already exist they will guarantee the presence of the Metasequoia in the future.
Land Acquisition
Land purchase and acquisition is the use of monetary funds to purchase land where Metasequoias already exist. Acquiring this land means that the trees can grow without the concern of timber companies cutting it down. After the land is purchased it can be donated to state or national parks so that others can visit the trees and enjoy their benefits. This approach requires a large amount of funding, but it is a good way to preserve natural habitats, not only for the Metasequoia, but also for species that live in these areas.
Education
It is vital to teach others about
the importance of preserving the Metasequoia. By having educational programs
that teach elementary to high school kids about the impact the tree has in the
environment and what they can do to keep it from becoming extinct it is more
likely that they will take an interest in it as adults and keep building
awareness.
