Animals of the Tundra

The Tundra is inhabited by a few predators such as the Polar bear, Snow owl, Artic fox, and Grey wolf.  Musk Ox and Caribou are some of the large consumers that call the tundra home.  Also small rodents like the lemming and some birds live and eat on the tundra.

Arctic Fox

The arctic fox lives on small mammals and birds that it can catch on the tundra.  It also eats scraps left over by the polar bears and other predators.  The arctic fox finds home in the side of hills and cliffs where it digs a burrow to live in but doesn't hibernate.

Musk Ox

Snowy Owls

Snowy Owls live in the tundra most of the year but will leave in hard winters to find more food.  The snowy owls diet consists of ten lemmings or other small rodents a day.  Because of the 24 hour light period in the tundra Snowy owls had to adapt and do there hunting during both day and night.  The owls perch on the highest ground they can find in the tundra because there is no trees to hunt from

Lemmings

Lemmings are the major food supply of the tundra's predators.  Because of this lemmings reproduce very quickly often having three litters a year with a 20 day pregnancy.  Within a month the new lemmings can have their own litters.
