Preservation Programs for Tropical Rainforests

Today’s world is experiencing difficulty in maintaining a sustainable living environment.  One major concern is that increased population growth among humans has contributed to various negative issues.  Topics including loss of biodiversity, increased emissions of green house gasses, and global warming are just a few areas causing high levels of apprehension.  Many of the problems that today’s world faces are initiated through one particular source; rainforest destruction to meet the needs of the growing human population!  The rainforest is the single most bio-diverse place on earth and each year an endless amount of forest is destroyed.  With the destruction of these resources many species of plant and animal still not realized to be in existence are becoming extinct.  The rainforest is also home to many Indigenous Peoples who are increasingly becoming “homeless”.  Furthermore the loss of rainforest increases the ability for green house gasses to reach the ozone layer and cause global warming.  The problem with rainforest protection is that not enough people contain the necessary knowledge to understand the issues that are initiated by destroying the forests.  Due to the level of significance the rainforest has on the sustainability of Earth’s ecosystem, many agencies have begun to create protection programs designed to minimize many of the existing problems.  In addition these agencies are being implemented in hopes to increase people’s awareness of the importance of these issues.  One company our team chose to follow is Starbucks, which over the last couple of decades has made important contributions to rainforest protection.  Along with companies such as Starbucks multiple N.G.O’s and various International Organizations exist which have also taken steps to saving rainforests from being completely destroyed.
