INTS201 Foundations of International
Studies
This course is an introduction to the area of International Studies.
International Studies is an interdisciplinary approach to the investigation
of globally sensitive themes and problems of "war and peace," technological
change, human rights, modernization, economic growth and development, and
environment change. Through readings, discussion and analysis of position
statements and selected case studies of global themes and issues, students
will learn the basic concepts and principles that are applied to international
and cross-cultural studies. This one-semester course is aimed at providing
the student with the basic theoretical and historical foundations and the
analytical framework he/she will need for future course work focusing on
specific global topics, problems and/or geographic regions.
INTS202 Cultural Diversity in
the Modern World
Through reading, discussion and comparative analysis of common problems
faced by diverse societies in different geographical areas, students will
be exposed to a variety of collective understandings and symbolic systems
for dealing with such issues as: the natural environment and survival,
the role of the individual in society, the character of intergroup and
intragroup relations, the nature of authority, the interrelationship of
power and wealth, and other cultural dimensions of human existence in the
modern world.
INTS490 Seminar on Global Issues
This senior seminar is designed as an interdisciplinary capstone course
for students in the International Studies concentration. It will include
an in-depth examination of important global issues such as economic development,
the population problem, and international security. The implications of
these cases will be discussed and evaluated as we look toward the twenty-first
century. Each student will study a particular global policy problem and
present it to the seminar as part of a semester-long research project. Senior
standing is required. Prerequisite INTS201, INTS202
