Snow Removal Policy and Procedures

The Bryant University Grounds Staff personally takes care of all on campus snow removal sanding and salting of roads and walkways. For your safety and convenience, we have the following priorities in place. Please be patient with our crews as they are working diligently to clear your way and provide for a safe campus.

Weather related delays or cancellation information, due to snow emergency, can be obtained by calling 232-6002 as outlined in the Office of University Relations policy.

The following snow removal plan shall be implemented whenever weather conditions exist that create hazardous conditions on walkways and roads of the university property.

The Department of Public Safety shift supervisor, along with the grounds supervisor will monitor weather forecast for anticipated accumulation of ice or snow and be prepared to respond at the appropriate time. Their judgment will be used to determine the most effective time to dispatch the snow removal crews. Snow removal crews will consist of both grounds supervisor and grounds staff augmented with custodial staff, and outside contractors as necessary, predicated on the severity of the storm.

Initial efforts will be concentrated on treating the walkways with calcium and magnesium so as to melt the initial snow fall and provide a safe walking surface. This application starts the melting process of the first ½ to 1 inch of accumulation and thereby prevents the walkways from becoming slippery. This standard procedure is taken as a safety measure to assure residents, faculty, and staff safe passage during the initial stages of a storm. The university mechanical sweepers will be dispatched to maintain all walking surfaces if the accumulation continues. Plows will be dispatched based on the requirements of the storm to service the following areas. Priorities are to maintain Jacobs Drive and the George E. Bello Center entrance road to the parking areas to provide a safe passage from the state roads to the parking area, as well as all fire lanes and handicapped parking areas.

The service road in front of Resident Hall 16, 14, and 15 as well as John Mowry Road and the rear access to the Wellness Center are included in the first areas as they provide access for Fire Safety and Public Safety vehicles. The C-3 parking area will have the individual aisles maintained to provide a safe passage from or to parking spaces. Town

House roads and Senior Apartment roads and lots will be cleared as manpower and equipment become available. Walkways in this area will be maintained with the use of walk behind snow blowers to provide safe passage to the residence complex.

Residents must remove their vehicles from the C-3 parking area to allow the area to be plowed. Vehicles not removed will be removed at owner's expense.

Areas that have been plowed will have the snow banks removed by front-end loaders upon completion of all plowing to insure maximum parking in the main lots. This will be accomplished at the completion of the major snow fall and all roads and walks made safe and passable. Snow will be transported to areas in the athletic field complex or to the lower campus.

Residents may obtain snow shovels for shoveling out their individual vehicles at the Entry Control Station or the Department of Public Safety Office in the Unistructure. A student ID must be presented in exchange for the shovel and will be returned upon return of the shovel.

The Bryant University Grounds Department can be reached by calling 232-5052.

Superintendent of Grounds is Mr. Robert Lawton. There are 11 members of the grounds staff assigned to snow removal as well as 4 custodians and outside contractors as deemed necessary by Superintendent Lawton.
