Jupiter represents expansion, exploration, and the search
for knowledge and meaning. Jupiter's associated body part is the
liver (Bruce-Mitford
113).
Zeus was the king
of heaven and Earth and of all the Olympian gods. He was also known
as the god of justice. He was named king of the gods in the special
meeting that followed his overthrow of the god Cronus and the Titans.
In the council of the gods that followed Cronus's overthrow, Zeus
was crowned Lord of Heaven and Earth and of all the gods. He granted
Poseidon dominion over the Sea, and his other brother Hades dominion
over the underworld. Zeus's wife was Hera, who was very jealous
of the attention that Zeus paid to other goddesses and women.
Zeus presided over the gods on Mount Olympus in Thessaly (Thessalia).
He wore the aegis and wielded a terrible thunder bolt. His bird
was the eagle and his tree the oak. His principal shrines were at
Dodona and at Olympia, where the Olympian Games were celebrated
in his honor every fourth year (MSN
Encarta Online "Zeus").
Jupiter, also called
Jove, is the supreme deity in Rome. He was god of the sky, rain,
and the hurler of the thunderbolt. Any place struck by lightning
was sacred to him. He was the guardian of property, and the guarantor
of oaths (KET "Jupiter").
Jupiter was the king of the Roman gods and is one of mythology's
most powerful figures. Although not omnipresent or omniscient, he
has authority over gods, goddesses and humankind (St.
Michael's College "Jupiter").
Jupiter obtained his position by overthrowing Saturn. Jupiter had
two brothers who also obtained celsetial positions. Neptune became
the God of the sea and Pluto became the God of the underworld. When
thinking about this, it makes sense; Neptune may have a liquid layer
underneath its cloud layers and Pluto is the most elusive planet.
Jupiter is aptly named. It is the second brightest object in the
night sky if the Earth's moon is not included. And it is the only
object that travels across the entire celestial sphere when viewable.
It is also the largest planet in the solar system and contains four
very large moons. Jupiter is truly the KING of the planets (Onalaska
High School "Mythology of Jupiter").
