Timeline of the
Indianapolis Motor Speedway


1909 Indianapolis Motor Speedway was built by its four founders (Carl Fisher, James Allison, Arthur Newby, and Frank Wheeler)
The track opened on August 19 with a crushed stone and tar track
1911 On May 11 the first 500 mile race was held
1927 Eddie Rickenbacker and his associates purchased the speedway
1937 Parts of the track were resurfaced with asphalt
1945 Tony Hulman obtained ownership
1956 The first museum-office building was completed
1957 The control tower and pit area were built
1959 An electronic scoring pylon was installed on the main straight-away
1976 A multimillion dollar Hall of Fame was opened up to the public
Entire track resurface with asphalt
1986 A new garage area was built
1988 The entire track and pit area were completely repaved with asphalt
1991 A new infield drainage system was installed
1994 A new state of the art electronic scoring pylon was installed and replace the original one
1995 The track was completely repaved with a new high density asphalt surface
