Back to Main Menu
In 1914 the first electric washing machine was introduced into the American market and the first automatic washing machine was available in 1935. It eliminated the time-consuming chore of running wet clothes through wringers. The first 3 pictures above illustrate the older style hand ringer washing machines while the last picture displays the electric washing machine. Between 1926 and 1935 the demand for washing machines rose considerably and prices were more then cut in half. A washing machine that used to cost $150 now only cost the American consumer $60. The appearance of the electric washing machine reduced the amount of drugery in completing the household laundry for many American women. By the end of the 1920's nearly 1/2 of all American household possessed a washing machine.
