Early 1910's Electric Vacuum Cleaners

The first electric suction vacuum was patented in 1901 by H.C. Booth and the Hoover Company in 1908 introduced the first vacuum for home use.  The appearance of the electric vacuum cleaner reduced the bending and stooping previously required to clean the household as well as reduced the need for a servant to perform the task.  The electric vacuum reduced the drugery of cleaning and thus vacuuming became a task for the housewife to perform.  By the end of the 1920's almost 1/2 of American households would possess an electric vacuum.
