The sixties brought, arguably, the most influential band of all time, The Beatles.  Their songwriting ability and sweet harmonies sent the country into a frenzi.  Left handed bassist James Paul McCartney played on a Hofner Violin Bass and a left handed Les Paul Standard(shown).  He played these instruments through a 1966 Vox 'piggy-back' AC-30, with factory installed top boost circuit and reverb, amplifier.  Lead guitarist George Harrison played on a 1963 Rickenbacker 360 twelve string guitar.  Singer, songwriter, and rhythm guitarist John Lennon used a 1965 Epiphone Sheraton ES-330.

The Doors brought back the jazzy, bluesy type of rock and roll.  Lead guitarist Robby Krieger belted out his spanish flamenco style leads on a Gibson SG Special.  Keyboardist Ray Manzarek played his melodies on a Vox Contiential organ and eventually switch over to the Gibson Kalamazoo.  Manzarek layed out the low tones using a Fender Rhodes Piano Bass.  Drummer John Densmore played on a variety of drum sets, but he mainly used a Ludwig.  He used the basic four-piece setup: snare, bass, and two tom-toms.  Densmore used three Zildjian cymbals on the first three albums, a twenty-inch medium ride, sixteen-inch-thin crash, and fourteen-inch high hats.  Later on Densmore got a couple Paiste 605s.  Densmore never got into the two-bass-drum routine.  He felt that he should practice more rather than add more drums.(Riordan 120)

Another influential band that came out of the sixties was the Grateful Dead.  In the beginning, the Dead had a line up that included Jerry Garcia, lead guitar, Bobby Weir, rhythm guitar, Phil Lesh, bass, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, keyboards/harmonica, Bill Kreutzman and Mickey Hart, percussion.  Both Phil and Bobby played on Modulus guitars and basses.  Pigpen played on a Hammond B-3 organ.  Jerry played on a vairety of guitars throught the years.  In the sixties he played on a form of a Les Paul.  In the seventies he switched to a Fender Stratocaster.  In the eighties he played on a custom made guitar, which became his trademark.
