Monaural vs. Stereophonic Sound Waves

To experience the following sound waves, you must have a properly configured sound card.  You must also have either a set of speakers or a set of headphones attached to your computer.  If you choose to use speakers, place one to your left and one to your right, so that you are in the middle.  To get the best stereo effect, use a set of headphones.  Please note that these files may take a minute or two to download, and you may need a plug-in to listen to them.

I have chosen three different sound waves (a motor scooter passing back and forth, a car crash, and the last fifteen seconds of The Beatles' "I Want To Hold Your Hand") to illustrate the effect of stereo.  I suggest that you play each one first in mono, then in stereo, to appreciate the difference.

Car crash (mono) Car crash (stereo)
"I Want To Hold Your Hand" (mono) "I Want To Hold Your Hand" (stereo)
