The Mustang
'88 Mustang GT (factory, except some chroming)
The first pony car, and an instant classic upon introduction in the
'60's. This model was not even the first based on a platform.
The first model was based on the Ford Falcon. This model (Mustang
enthusasits, skip to the next paragraph) was based on the late '70's Mercury
Lynx. A small (many would say junkie) economy car. The '79
Mustang was the first on this platform, and was a weak car. The Ford
5.0 powerplant was still choking on the smog restrictions, but Ford kept
at it, and with minor tweaks and changes every model year until this models
demise in '93, created an very fun to drive car with impressive performance.
And this from and Mercury Lynx platform.
Time for the next shocker. That frame is still in production.
Yup, you guessed it, the new Mustang isn't really all that new. That
little economy car's platform has endured over 2 decades and counting.
Now, can you imagine how much money Ford has saved by using a platform?
