Modern Era 20th Century

Scientific advance and rapid economic growth resulted in new social attitudes towards hospitals.

Private hospitals were created for the wealthy who had to pay for their room and the attendance they received.

Hospitals had changed from a social institution to a medical institution.

By the 20th century medical technology shaped the efficiency of hospitals the same way manufacturing technology shaped the factories.

Health insurance was generated to help support the high cost of scientific medicines being used in the 20th century.

The hospitals of today have taken the small personal care institutions and turned them into large, bureaucratic organizations with impersonal technologically sophisticated treatments resulting in a dehumanizing element. These hospitals are becoming only available to those who can afford the expense leaving the poor society without accessibility.
