1700 to 1850

It was between this period that the foundation for the modern hospital system was established.

During this time the number of hospitals increased, the quality of care improved, specialization emerged and a shift from care to cure was emphasized.

The first United States hospital appeared in Philadelphia in 1751 in which Ben Franklin had a great influence on. He used two arguments in favor of hospitals. First a place was needed to remove insane people from the streets and second a place was need for workmen to regain their strength in order to provide productive labor.

Hospitals of this period were a social need.

The majority of hospitals were managed by voluntary private citizens.

Hospitals main function was to serve the poor sick.
