Professional Development Exchange
Jo Zhang, Deputy Director, Alumni Relations, Sun Yat-Sen University

Bryant University welcomes Zhe "Jo" Zhang to the Alumni Relations and Development offices. Jo, here on a professional development exchange, is the Deputy Director of Alumni Affairs at Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou, China. He hopes to expand Alumni and Development initiatives at his University and will work with Bryant University Advancement over the next four months.

Jo chose Bryant based on the University’s strong relationship with Chinese Universities through US-China Institute as well as the Lingnan Foundation. Because of Bryant’s presence in China, Jo says, “Bryant University is famous not only for academics, but also for their work in alumni relations”. The Lingnan Foundation, an American philanthropy, seeks to contribute to the advancement of higher education in South China and, in this process, promote understanding between Chinese and Americans.  The Foundation provided funding for Jo’s exchange in keeping with their mission to support scholarly exchange, educational innovation, and service to society.

When asked what he likes about being on campus so far, Jo responded, “Bryant has a beautiful campus with modern equipment for all the buildings. The students here are smart and well-educated with good manners. The faculty and staff are responsible for their jobs and also have a wide range of knowledge. The staff is very good to me and makes me feel so welcome”.

America in Chinese means a beautiful country. Jo recognizes that people all over the world are divided in their opinion of America. Many, he says, share in the American Dream , while many others harbor Anti-Americanism. Jo wanted to form his impression of the United States first hand. He believes we should go to the country if we really want to know and understand its culture.  “In my mind”, reflects Jo, “America is a developed country in the material sense as well as in spiritual values and culture”.

Jo is a traveler at heart and dreams of someday visiting 100 countries.  He is really enjoying his stay in the US and is sure it will remain one of the wonderful highlights of his life. Jo will travel with Alumni Relations Team to several regional alumni events this spring, so hopefully you will have the chance to meet him. And if you’re really lucky, maybe you’ll even get to hear him sing! 我们高兴地欢迎你在这里 (we are pleased to welcome you here).
