Bryant Spring Sports get ready to Kick-Off Season

The softball team already made one trip down south in February, playing in the Centenary Tournament in Shreveport, Louisiana earlier this month, going 0-5 to start their Division I journey after winning 30 games last season in their final year of Division II competition. The team is led this year by tri-captains Stephanie Mirando, Anne Dobmeier and Ashley Coon, who will provide an offensive spark at the plate, while sophomore pitcher Samantha Houseal will carry the bulk of the pitching load on the mound. The Bulldogs make a trip to Fort Myers, Florida for the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament February 27 through March 1 and then spend spring break at the Rebel Games in Orlando.

Head coach Jamie Pinzino leads the baseball team into Division I play after setting a school record with 43 wins last year. Seniors Kevin Cobb and Dan Lozeau will pace the starting pitching rotation in 2009, after combining for 11-wins last year. Shortstop Pat McKenna enters his fourth year as a starter and will provide leadership in the middle-infield for the Bulldogs, looking to build on his .305 batting average a year ago. The squad opens-up the season with a  four-game series against Mercer in Georgia over spring break.

The Bryant women’s lacrosse team returns leading scorer Allison Faiola to the field this season as well as welcoming back head coach Karen Healy, who left the university for a year to coach at Wagner College, looking to build on a 10-8 season in their final season of Division II play in 2008. The Bulldogs started the year playing Louisville and 13th ranked UNH, falling in each by scores of 16-6 and 19-2 respectively. The team plays at Howard and at Saint Francis (PA) over spring break.

Zack Greer, a first team All-American at Duke University a year ago and NCAA all-time leading scorer, joins the Bryant men’s lacrosse team to be reunited with head coach Mike Pressler for the 2009 season. The Bulldogs, who won 14 games last year and won the Northeast-10 Conference tournament, started the year by playing the number one ranked Virginia Cavaliers, falling by a score of only 10-4. Since then, they have won back-to-back games by defeating Sacred Heart, 22-8, and Dartmouth, 12-9. The team opens up at home Saturday, February 28 at home against Wagner and will travel to Maryland to take on Mount St. Mary’s, Loyola Maryland, and University of Maryland during spring break.
