Why Choose Accounting?

Accounting is a career path and not just a job. The skills that you learn will apply to any career that you take. Accounting is a profession that is as prestigious as becoming a doctor or lawyer. Here are some insights and experiences from senior accounting majors:
Whether it be public, private, or governmental, the field of accounting provides a world of job opportunities. With the desire to work in public accounting upon graduation, I obtained an internship with a Big Five firm (KPMG Peat Marwick) during the course of my sophomore year. I continued my employment with KPMG up until my senior year. And, before the summer was through, the firm has extended to me a permanent offer for employment upon graduating from Bryant. At this point, I took the initiative to start interviewing with other firms. Having interviewed with each firm that I was interested in, I entered my Senior year with two very lucrative job offers. By mid September, I felt quite content after choosing the firm for whom I would like to work for upon graduation. Needless to say, I am able to sit back and enjoy my last year at Bryant.

Accounting wasn't an obvious choice for me. I originally wanted to go into law, but wanted an undergraduate degree that I cold fall back on. I chose accounting because it seemed to provide more job opportunities that other concentrations did. However, as I became exposed to more advanced topics, I realized that it involved more than just bookkeeping and sitting at a desk for eight hours every day. Now I am excited about the many opportunities that will be available to me upon graduation. While I initially plan to follow the typical path into public accounting, where I will have exposure to numerous clients and industries, my future offers unlimited possibilities. Be it a partnership, a career in private industry as a consultant, manager, or officer, or my own business, I know my career will consistently offer intriguing challenges, new faces, financial stability, and tremendous opportunities.

Choosing a major in accounting is probably one of the best moves that any business student can make. Having a background in accounting provides a good base for other business classes as well as an understanding of why and how businesses operate. Accounting is a dynamic field that provides many different job opportunities within the profession. Not only can you go into public, private, or governmental accounting, but you may also choose fields such as consulting and information systems. If you are interested in a career with the FBI, you may also want to consider accounting. The Bureau hires hundreds of accountants every year to investigate white collar crime, fraud, and embezzlement. No matter what career path you choose, the skills and knowledge that the accounting profession offers are assets in the business world.

As an accounting major, I have had many internship opportunities that have made me a well rounded individual. Because accounting involves analyzing problems and logically thinking, you gain the ability to work in any area of business. I have had internships in manufacturing, a financial institution, government agency, health care, and public accounting. These employers hired me to do different projects because they knew that as an accounting major I had the ability to adapt quickly and learn new tasks with little guidance. Although some of these internships involved traditional accounting work, most provided problem solving projects allowing me to make recommendations for changes to be made within the company. This illustrates how accounting is shifting its focus to more problem solving and less number crunching. Being interested in working in Washington, DC, I have had several companies fly me in for interviews because they know I can be a valuable asset to them. I was also extended an offer with one of the largest accounting firms in the world by the first day of my senior year.

If you want a challenge and you're a goal seeker, being an accounting major offers you all the opportunity in the world. Employers seek accounting majors because of their dedication to excellence and hard work. The opportunities are endless. Accounting majors can enter virtually any line of business. Perhaps an indication of this is the fact that, consistently year after year more accounting-major recruiters come on campus. Accounting is by far the best choice that I made besides coming to Bryant University. If you are unsure of your major, you may want to consider accounting because of the many opportunities it has to offer.
