coralWhat is a Coral Reef?                                  

            -made up of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), same material as a clam shel                   

          -found in shallow water     
                                                                         

Species found in the
Great Barrier Reef - Fish, Plants, Algae

            -near continent or volcanic island

            -largest reef is the Great Barrier Reef, found off of Australia                                                 

                                              -Individual coral colonies may be up to 1000 years old.                                                                           

Types of Coral Reefs:                                                                                                          good

         -Fringing Reefs: reef directly adjacent to land (either continent or volcanic island)

         -Atoll Reefs: only associated with volcanic island, reef surrounds island which is completely submerged

            -Barrier Reefs: water (lagoon) separating the reef from land
